Collecting the Tools for Success

So you want to setup a SharePoint server but your not sure what your first steps need to be to get going. Some would say that you need to have a plan for deploying SharePoint yet others would say that you need to understand what SharePoint is and how you want to use it.
All of this is true but where we’re going to start is by collecting all of the basic necessities to get you started on a successful SharePoint deployment. If your mister or misses money bags, which is what Microsoft hopes, then you will want to consider purchasing one of the versions Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS). Me personally, I like free so free is where we’ll start.
The first tool that we will need and the most important is called Windows SharePoint Services v3 (WSS). WSS makes up the core components of MOSS and obviously by being the core components you will not get all of the bells and whistles of MOSS but you do get a very robust collaboration platform.
At this point I am going to give you the download links to various SharePoint resources to get you going. And I’ll elaborate on these in future bog posts. One quick note, You will need a legal ($$$$$) copy of Windows Server 2003 x86/x64 or Windows Server 2008 x68/x64 before you can proceed.
Windows SharePoint Services v3 x86
Windows SharePoint Services v3 x64
WSS v3 October 2009 Cumulative Update
SQL Server 2008 Express with Advanced Services x86
SQL Server 2008 Express with Advanced Services x64
Happy downloading!!
